Devon Conway makes International debut for New Zealand

Sam Shaikh4 Dec 2020 - 18:23

Former Deane player Devon Conway made his International debut for New Zealand this week as the Black Caps beat the West Indies

'Dev' starred with 41 from 29 balls on debut as the Black Caps won by 5 wickets in Auckland, and then made 65* not out as the Black Caps took the series win at Mount Maunganui.

Devon starred for the Deane during the 2010 season as he plundered 797 runs with a high score of 111 against Weston as he averaged 61.31 with 1 hundred and 6 fifties.

Having graduated from the prestigious King Edward School in Johannesburg the previous summer, Dev followed the footsteps of former South African player Grant Thomson to join the Deane ahead of our 2010 WEPL Premier One league campaign.

A prodigious talent at club and schoolboy level, Dev was on the edge of a South Africa Under-19 berth in 2010, coming through in the same batch as Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma.

However, after leaving his native South Africa in August 2017, Dev has since become an integral part of the Wellington franchise in all formats. His run scoring record for Wellington reads:

  • First-class: 2,008 @ 69.24, 5 hundreds.
  • List A: 1,227 runs @ 47.19, 2 hundreds.
  • T20: 1,071 runs @ 53.55, 2 hundreds.

In October last year, Dev wrote himself into the New Zealand cricket history books with an unbeaten 327* for Wellington against Canterbury in the Plunket Shield, only the 8th triple century ever scored in New Zealand first class cricket history.

Conway qualified for New Zealand in August this year and was even awarded a central contract before he’d even been capped!

Having made his white ball debut for the Black Caps this week we all hope it won't be long before he makes his full Test debut. With the next New Zealand Test tour scheduled for June 2022 it might be a little while yet before his return to English soil.

Good luck Devon and many Congratulations from all at TDCC
